One of the world’s most beautiful women.   A small bag of ‘dirty-looking stones’.  A former African ruler, accused of appalling crimes.

It sounds like the stuff of fiction, but it happened.   The supermodel Naomi Campbell was subpoenaed to give evidence at the trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor. And suddenly, the world’s media took notice.

Was the reporting of this story shallow?  Should reporters have given more prominence to this important war crimes trial before a supermodel got her small part in the story? Or is it in the nature of the media, always to go for the celebrity angle?

Media coach and former BBC reporter Tony Coll says the coverage of Naomi Campbell’s minor role in this trial tells us a lot about the media. And there are lessons for PR professionals – particularly those who count celebrities among their clients.
